Recommended software applications

Pamoja Education recommends a PC / Windows / Microsoft Office set up, for example:
  • For images and document editing: MS Word
  • For spreadsheet editing: MS Excel
  • For presentation creation: MS PowerPoint
  • For database manipulation: MS Access
  • For website authoring: A simple text editor such as Notepad

It is possible to use Mac-alternatives, Pages/Numbers/Keynote/TextEdit, for the majority of the course. However, for the database activities you will need to use Microsoft Access. This will require that you run Access and Windows in a Parallels or Boot Camp environment. You will also need access to this set up for the final exams.

Teachers will review and grade assignments during the course. There are also unit discussions to support students with each topic. The final examination consists of three externally-assessed papers:
  • Paper 1—2 hours, 40%, questions on ICT theory
  • Paper 2—2 hours 30 minutes, 30%, assessment of practical skills (document production, data manipulation and presentations)
  • Paper 3—2 hours 30 minutes, 30%, assessment of practical skills (data analysis and website authoring)
*For papers 2 and 3 students will need access to a computer to complete their examination. The computer must not be connected to the internet or email, and electronic source files will need to be loaded onto the student’s computer system before the start of the examination.

Advice from our teachers

In order to succeed in IGCSE Information and Communication Technology, we recommend students set aside five to six hours a week to study. It is important that students regularly keep up with the readings and the course activities in a timely manner. And that they contact their Pamoja teacher if they fall behind or need help with assignments.
